About Us

Lewis Girls' is an 11-18 comprehensive school and currently has 680 students. The school is situated in Ystrad Mynach, but attracts students from a much wider catchment area of approximately 40 square miles. These students attend the school as a result of parents exercising their right of choice of school. Lewis Girls' and Lewis School Pengam have close links with each other and with our nine partner primary schools. We also benefit from our collaboration with Heolddu, Idris Davies and Coleg Y Cymoedd. These links enable a reciprocal broadening of subject choices for all 6th Form students in the four schools. Many students travel to and from our school accessing a wide range of subjects within the Consortium.

The staff is well established and committed to the achievement of high standards and to the provision of a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Professional Development has a very high profile and the school is continually improving as a result of the investment in our teaching and learning.

We have an impressive record of success in academic, sporting, musical, cultural, charitable, enterprise and social activities extending over many years. Our expectations of our students and staff are high, but we are very proud the ethos of our school and our commitment to the wellbeing of every member of our school community.

The  school benefits from  very dedicated  governors  with a range of experience to  support and challenge the headteacher in the leadership of the school.  Governors have a   strategic role  in evaluating the school’s progress and  planning for improvement and also in  establishing the school’s policies.  Governors are well informed about the school’s progress through the headteacher’s  reports  which are issued prior to the Full Governing Body meetings held each  half term.  Governors also belong to a range of statutory and non-statutory  sub-committees which  have delegated powers awarded  by the Governing Body as a whole.  The Chair of Governors converses  regularly with the headteacher and has the authority to respond to letters, act in an emergency  and make some decisions on behalf of the Full Governing Body.

Our Chair of Governors is Mr James Grashoff.

Our Headteacher is: Mrs L Denton
