Year 10 Autumn Term

English

Students in year 10 will continue their GCSE English Literature journey throughout the term. They will develop their reading, writing and oracy skills through thematic units. There are two compulsory units of study that students will complete over the course of the year. Unit 1(Of Mice and Men & modern poetry) is an externally assessed examination. Students will sit the examination on January the 11th 2022 . The skills needed for this unit will be the focus of student study next term. The complex reading skills of synthesis, evaluation and comparison will be practiced regularly to develop student confidence and resilience. Writing tasks will continue to focus on the development of fluency and accuracy, preparing our students for the challenges of the post 16 world. Unit 3 will be assessed via NEA (non-examination assessment) and include two pieces of extended writing using Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet or Macbeth and a range of Welsh poetry. Throughout these units all students will receive a blended learning approach, being taught through both online and offline activities.

GCSE Language learning broadens students’ horizons and encourages them to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries. Students develop new ways of seeing the world, enabling them to become compassionate and resilient Global Citizens. The International Languages department employs a range of strategies to ensure students learn in an enjoyable, positive and inclusive environment.

We begin year 10 by revisiting key grammatical ideas where students can consolidate their knowledge of how adjectives behave, the importance of the gender of nouns, cognates, subject pronouns and verbs. We explicitly teach the present tense through the topics of youth culture and current study.

Students enjoy a variety of different online platforms such as google classroom to either carry out independent learning or complete specific ‘assignments’ for homework.  Students can also access online vocabulary learning from their own home via www https://uk.language-gym.com. We also offer students the opportunity to purchase Mary Glasgow magazines, which enable them to read articles designed for learners of their own age on current affairs and contemporary topics

All students are given French sentence builder books, revision guides and past papers.

Welsh

Students will start the GCSE course revisiting many grammar points taught throughout KS3, however they will be expected to develop their writing skills with the introduction of new vocabulary such as similes, idioms and rhetorical questions. Students will be practising their oracy skills during all lessons with our 'Amser Clonc' discussion tasks, and completing exam styles questions. Whilst learning these new skills students will be studying Unit 1 of the course which covers topics in the theme Ieuenctid (youth).  This includes the topics ffrindiau, chwaraeon, canu pop and many more. students are expected to use the apps Quizlet, tiny cards and Duolingo to help develop their skills. WJEC resources such as online tasks, the use of their GCSE revision textbook will also be used consistently both in lessons and at home.

Year 10 Spring Term

Welsh

This term students will be learning how to express their personal opinion on Technology. They will be learning how to give a balanced opinion with examples to support their opinion. Students will also be working on developing listening skills and learning how to respond to what they have heard. Students will also start looking at the topic Cadw'n Iach / Keeping healthy. Students will learn vocabulary for this topic and we will be revising all aspects of the conditional tense in order to be able to offer advice on keeping healthy. We use  a variety of strategies within lessons to help with learning. We do lots of listening and speaking exercises as well as reading and writing work. We play lots of games to help reinforce vocabulary and also use apps such as Quizlet , and Kahoot, Blooket and Memrise to further reinforce learning. Learners are encouraged to use these apps at home, and parents could log on too to have fun learning new vocabulary with their children. Duolingo is also a very useful app to help improve language skills at home. All homework is posted in Google Classroom. We have a twitter account and parents can follow us on @LGSCymraeg.

Agored/Vocational Studies

We will be starting a new topic 'An introduction to hair and beauty'. The Students  will learn about different jobs within the industry, what skills/qualifications are necessary and what services are offered. Lessons will be via live and pre-recorded sessions.

Year 10 summer term

English

Students have worked very hard since September fully embracing the challenges of the GCSE English Literature course. The course is now complete and students will receive their GCSE grade on the 23rd August 2022.

In the summer term we will begin studying GCSE English Language. This course encompasses elements of reading, writing and oracy and will be assessed formally in June 2023.

Our first focus will be Unit 1 - Oracy. The students will prepare an individual presentation on a topic of their choice followed by a group presentation on a topic selected by the WJEC. To prepare students for these tasks we will be fully utilising blended learning, enabling students to research their chosen topic and practising persuasive skills. This unit enables students to pursue a topic of interest to them and many students choose to explore complex topics that enable them to be ambitious, capable learners who are also ethically informed.

Students can access support via a range of sources including: Their own digital book, SENECA Learning Platform, GCSE Bitesize,  GCSE core texts.

 

INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES

WELSH

We will begin this term by studying the topic “ Problemau Pobl Ifanc” ( Young People’s Problems) Within this topic, pupils will be discussing the pressures that are on young people today. We will do a past paper reading question on this topic, as well as practising  listening skills. We will then be moving on to a completely new unit Cymru a’r Byd ( Wales and the World). Within this topic students will learn vocabulary to help them discuss Welsh culture, the importance of the Welsh language and stars of Wales. Students will also be working on developing listening skills and learning how to respond to what they have heard. Pupils will complete past paper reading and writing questions on this topic. We use  a variety of strategies within lessons to help with learning. We do lots of listening and speaking exercises as well as reading and writing work. We play lots of games to help reinforce vocabulary and also use apps such as Quizlet, and Kahoot, Blooket and Memrise to further reinforce learning. Learners are encouraged to use these apps at home, and parents could log on too to have fun learning new vocabulary with their children. Duolingo is also a very useful app to help improve language skills at home. During this term, pupils will have the opportunity to attend a Clwb Cymraeg during lunchtime to help improve confidence with speaking Welsh. The aim is to speak Welsh spontaneously which will help no end in their speaking exams in year 11. I also encourage pupils to watch Welsh tv programmes on S4C to help improve listening skills and pronunciation and to further improve their vocabulary. All homework is posted in Google Classroom.
