Students in year 10 will continue their GCSE English Literature journey throughout the term. They will develop their reading, writing and oracy skills through thematic units. There are two compulsory units of study that students will complete over the course of the year. Unit 1(Of Mice and Men & modern poetry) is an externally assessed examination. Students will sit the examination on January the 11th 2022 . The skills needed for this unit will be the focus of student study next term. The complex reading skills of synthesis, evaluation and comparison will be practiced regularly to develop student confidence and resilience. Writing tasks will continue to focus on the development of fluency and accuracy, preparing our students for the challenges of the post 16 world. Unit 3 will be assessed via NEA (non-examination assessment) and include two pieces of extended writing using Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet or Macbeth and a range of Welsh poetry. Throughout these units all students will receive a blended learning approach, being taught through both online and offline activities.

GCSE Language learning broadens students’ horizons and encourages them to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries. Students develop new ways of seeing the world, enabling them to become compassionate and resilient Global Citizens. The International Languages department employs a range of strategies to ensure students learn in an enjoyable, positive and inclusive environment.

We begin year 11 by revisiting key grammatical ideas where students can consolidate their knowledge of how adjectives behave, the importance of the gender of nouns, cognates, subject pronouns and verbs. We explicitly teach the present, past and future tenses through the topics of lifestyle and the wider world.

Students enjoy a variety of different online platforms such as google classroom to either carry out independent learning or complete specific ‘assignments’ for homework. Students can also access online vocabulary learning from their own home via www https://uk.language-gym.com. We also offer students the opportunity to purchase Mary Glasgow magazines, which enable them to read articles designed for learners of their own age on current affairs and contemporary topics

All students are given French sentence builder books, revision guides and past papers.

Welsh

In the final year of the GCSE course Year 11 will be continuing to develop their grammar through topics. The first topic studied is Ser Cymru at an advanced level where the expectation is for all students to recognise the style of writing used with the use of grammar. They will be expected to recognise mistakes and make the corrections, continue to develop their oracy skills through our 'Amser Clonc' discussion tasks, and become familiar with exam style questions with the completion of certain speaking reading and writing style questions. We will be continuing to use Quizlet to reinforce their language skills and ability with recognising grammar structures. WJEC online resources to practise exam style questions will also be used along with the Welsh revision textbooks. Homework will be available on their Google classroom, and Duolingo will also be used both in school and at home. We encourage the use of apps such as Duolingo and Quizlet to be used on a daily basis to practise and learn sentence structures, along with aiding with their pronunciation. Our twitter page @LGSCymraeg will also have hints and tips added regularly.

Vocational Studies

Students will be completing their final few units in this qualification including Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector, Introduction to Healthy Eating and Health and Social Care Needs.

Welsh

Y11 students are completing the topic Cyflogaeth/Employment. Students will be learning to give their opinion on Profiad Gwaith / Work Experience . Students will then move on to the topic Welsh in the Workplace where pupils will look at how Welsh is used in places of work. We use a variety of strategies within lessons to help with learning. We do lots of listening and speaking exercises as well as reading and writing work. We play lots of games to help reinforce vocabulary and also use apps such as Quizlet, Kahoot, Blooket and Memrise to further reinforce learning. Learners are encouraged to use these apps at home, and parents could log on too to have fun learning new vocabulary with students. We have a twitter account and parents can follow us on @LGSCymraeg. As we complete the course, pupils will be completing lots of past paper questions on each unit. There will be particular focus on practicing for the speaking exam in the Spring term.

Vocational Studies

Year 11 are nearing the end of this qualification. They are finishing their final unit: Art: a personal project, Exploring digital photography or children learning through everyday experiences. These will be delivered using live and pre-recorded sessions.

English.

All students have worked very hard in English over the past two years and have now completed the course. There are opportunities for exam resits if required. In English lessons students will continue with their other core subjects giving them extra time to achieve the best possible results.

INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES

We begin the summer term by revisiting key grammatical ideas and all of the topics studied so far.  Students will be completing their oral examination on Friday 6th May so lessons will be geared around lots of oracy tasks in order for  pupils to practise role plays and conversations based around the topics studied at KS4.  There will also be lots of past paper practice and discussion around the examination techniques needed for the reading, writing and listening questions.  Students enjoy a variety of different online platforms such as google classroom to either carry out independent learning or complete specific ‘assignments’ for homework.  Students can access online vocabulary learning from their own home via https://uk.language-gym.com,  https://senecalearning.com/en-GB/.

WELSH

As students have already completed their speaking exam we will spend the rest of this half term revising for the unit 3 and unit 4 exams. Unit 3 will be on Tuesday 17th May and unit 4 will be on Thursday 9th June. Both exams are reading and writing exams. During lessons we will be completing past paper questions and pupils should be revising topics, sentence starters and vocabulary at home.
