Year 9 ICalculate Curriculum

Year 9 Autumn term

Numeracy

During year 9 numeracy lessons learners will spend time developing both their numeracy reasoning and procedural skills. These skills may include; multiplication and division; properties of cubes, problem solving with angles and ratio; expressing time as a decimal, mathematical reasoning; data analysis using google spreadsheets; selecting and creating graphs and charts; calculating percentages of amounts; finding the mean, mode or median of a set of data and calculating area including circles. Reasoning lessons are designed to develop their skills in question analysis and how to communicate their answers clearly.

Mathematics

In Year 9, learners will consolidate and extend their skills in all areas of mathematics. In particular they will begin to apply their KS3 knowledge to GCSE questions and stretch their understanding of algebra in preparation for the demands of GCSE and beyond as appropriate. During the first half of the term, learners will extend their knowledge of algebra through straight line graphs, forming and solving equations and inequalities, and testing conjectures (mathematical reasoning). During the second half of the Autumn term, learners will begin to apply their knowledge of 3D shape by drawing and constructing plans and elevations, and using isometric paper to represent 3D objects. In order to further support learners in becoming ambitious and capable learners, they will be introduced to a new interactive resource - Hegarty Maths.

 

Year 9 Spring term

Mathematics

During the spring term of year 9,students will continue to become more aware of the demands of GCSE Mathematics and Numeracy. They will use their existing knowledge of types of numbers, extending to include rational and real numbers. Students will revisit fraction arithmetic and further develop their understanding of HCF and LCM. Students will be introduced to more complex percentage questions including different forms of interest. Later in the spring term, Students will use their deduction skills for geometric questions and will be introduced to the concepts of Pythagoras' theorem. Through the spring term students will further apply their knowledge to a range of reasoning style questions in the form of DICE tasks. If your child requires any extra support with their independent maths or numeracy work, the Numeracy Surgery will take place at lunchtime on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays.

Numeracy

Students will spend this half term developing both numeracy reasoning and procedural skills. Some of the topics that will be covered during the spring term will aim to build learners real life skills with time, including using a clock in different formats, timezones, timetables and schedules. Moving onto money skills, including budgeting, calculating change, best buys and interest. Reasoning lessons are designed to develop their skills in question analysis and how to communicate their answers clearly.

Year 9 Summer term

Mathematics

Throughout the summer terms students will move onto topics such as mathematics and money, mathematics deduction and knowledge of numbers. Through the summer term students will further apply their knowledge to a range of reasoning style questions in the form of DICE tasks. There are many online resources for students to continue to use to help consolidate the skills taught in lessons independently such as MathsWatch - https://vle.mathswatch.co.uk/vle/ , MyMaths https://login.mymaths.co.uk/login  and Hegarty Maths https://hegartymaths.com/ .  Weekly independent taks on Hegarty Maths with continue to be set either as preparation for upcoming lessons or consolidation of previously taught skills. If you child requires any support with content from lessons, independent tasks or general confidence with mathematics we encourage them to attend The Numeracy Surgery. The Numeracy Surgery continues to run at lunchtimes from Tuesday to Thursday and afterschool on Tuesday for any extra support with maths or numeracy work.

Numeracy

Students will spend this half term developing both numeracy reasoning and procedural skills. The skills developed will not only benefit mathematics and numeracy but also encourage their cross-curricular numeracy skills to mature. As a result learners should see an overlap of skills used and topics covered in their numeracy lessons within other subject areas. The focus of this half term will be financial maths where learners will look at personal finance such as accounts, savings, compound and simple interest, loans and credit cards, salaries and budgeting. Reasoning lessons are designed to develop their skills in question analysis and how to communicate their answers clearly.
